Daily Mail stays classy, Telegraph and Times downbeat
As Britain wakes up to a new government we look at national press reaction to the Labour landslide
Welcome to your daily newsletter from Press Gazette on Friday 5 July, 2024.
The unambiguous nature of last night's general election exit poll at 10pm meant that for once national press election night first editions could be emphatic.
The Times continues to block comments on the online version of its leader page after a below-the-line revolt from subscribers over its election-day non-endorsement.
And the Telegraph continues to feel glum after yesterday's warning from Allister Heath that a Labour win would usher in the apocalypse.
But The Sun and Daily Mail have both put a brave face on things and for The Guardian's Polly Toynbee her joy is unrestrained.
And Ofcom has already rejected Nigel Farage's complaint against Channel 4 over its undercover report revealing racist comments made by one of his Reform UK canvassers. Farage said the report was "set up" by Channel 4 and amounted to "election interference". But Ofcom said there was no substance in his complaints so it would not be investigating.

Setting goals for US expansion with Footballco’s first North America CEO
Goal, Indivisa and Mundial publisher Footballco was reaching 30 million people in the US without having any meaningful boots on the ground.
But at the start of 2024 Jason Wagenheim arrived as its first CEO for North America, bringing lessons that sports publishing can learn from lifestyle after a long stint at Bustle Digital Group.
Wagenheim told Press Gazette UK editor Charlotte Tobitt about how he is approaching Footballco’s two-year runway ahead of the World Cup being held in the US, Canada and Mexico in 2026 as well as the value of going deeper – well beyond traditional match reporting – in an age of algorithms and generative AI.
