Google Top Stories winners revealed | Video now 'focus of everything' at The Sun
Tickets are still available for the Future of Media Technology 2014 in London on 12 September
Welcome to your daily newsletter from Press Gazette on Tuesday, 3 September. Press Gazette’s Future of Media Technology Conference, the UK’s biggest and best event in the UK for media leaders, is on 12 September in London. Secure your spot for the conference here.
News is largely what Google says it is and the window through which many view the world is the Top Stories box on the platform's search results page.
This is the panel of headlines and pictures which appear when you type a news-related query into the search engine.
New research shared with Press Gazette reveals that Governments, PR operations and even betting companies are getting their content into an area which - one would hope - should be reserved for bona fide journalism.
Our data also reveals which US and UK publishers are winning the battle to appear in the Top Stories box, with Yahoo News (a publisher which mainly aggregates journalism originated elsewhere) among the biggest winners.
“Over the past year, video has become the focus for everything we do", according to Sun editor Victoria Newton. Along with Cole, she explains some of the thinking behind News UK's new investment in video following the closure of TalkTV in the summer.
