Google's Sandbox could be publisher killer | National World still in hunt for Telegraph
And in a vote of confidence for flagging European economies Fortune announces major transatlantic expansion
Welcome to this week’s Future of Media newsletter from Press Gazette on Thursday 21 March brought to you today in association with Limio - the subscription commerce platform. Their latest report, ten ways to improve the checkout experience for media subscriptions, is available to download now.
There’s lots to enjoy in the latest National World results, including an attack on the BBC and the revelation that David Montgomery still wants to buy the Telegraph. Read all about it here.
We have more encouraging news from US-based business title Fortune which has cast a vote of confidence in flagging economies this side of the Atlantic with a major expansion of its European edition. New UK-based executive editor Alex Wood Morton spoke to us about what the magazine, events and digital brand is up to.
And, in less encouraging news, our investigative reporter Jim Edwards has been kicking the tyres of Google’s planned technology to replace publisher cookies on Chrome - the Sandbox - and he has found them to be decidedly wobbly.
Cookies underpin ad-funded journalism on the open web and they are on the way out. Some fear the Sandbox, as planned, could push publishers out of business.
The good news is that Google is working with the Competition and Markets Authority to improve Sandbox, so all is not lost, and UK regulators could ultimately block the rollout.
