Reddit is most cited domain in AI | GB News overtakes Sky and BBC in key slots
Plus the top 50 news sites in the US in June, the Trump embraces 'newsfluencers' and we've got your news diary for the week ahead.
Welcome to your daily Press Gazette media briefing on Monday, 4 August.
New data underlines the importance of Reddit both as a platform for journalism and a competitor for publishers.
The online discussion forum has laid claim to being the most cited platform when it comes to AI-generated answers. It is already growing as a source of referral traffic for publishers and is far ahead of X in the UK when it comes to monthly online reach.
Reddit was supercharged after it struck a $60 million-per-year deal with Google to licence content from its users for AI training in 2024. Since then, traffic to the platform has surged and it has received a massive boost to its visibility on Google platforms.
Today's data provides more evidence that Reddit is a platform publishers cannot afford to ignore.
UK News channel GB News has trumpeted more audience success overtaking both the BBC and Sky News when it comes to live viewing in several key audience slots last month.
The latest top 50 ranking of US news websites shows most growing traffic both month on month and year on year. Substack was one of the fastest growers, up 57% year on year in the US according to Press Gazette's exclusive ranking.
In another attack on the free press, US President Donald Trump has begun holding White House media briefings for sympathetic social media influencers in addition to accredited journalists.
Liam Scott writes: "The USA has historically championed press freedom globally. But the administration’s simultaneous embrace of pro-Trump influencers and attacks on critical media signal that Washington doesn’t really care about independent journalism anywhere in the world."
Your news diary for the week ahead includes the 80th anniversary of the Hiroshima atomic bomb detonation on Wednesday.
